The Hidden Cost of Dust: How a Dirty Filter Spikes Your Energy Bills by 20%

All of us search for methods to cut costs every month. We shut off the lights, weather-strip our doors, and maybe even adjust the temperature settings slightly downwards when it comes to winter heating in Southern Ontario. The Physics of Resistance: Why Your System Struggles

However, this is based on proper maintenance, meaning that running an HVAC unit at maximum pressure all the time can reduce its life span by five to seven years. How Often Should You Really Change It?

Our systems in Southern Ontario are kept busy 24/7. Even though changing filters every 90 days would be considered “normal,” there are times when your situation may call for changes to take place after 30 or 60 days.

Some “High-Use” factors to look for include:

  • Pets: Your pets shed hair and are furry, and you will realize that you will be required to change your filters more frequently because there is more accumulation.
  • Allergies: In case anyone in the house is an allergy victim, it would be prudent for you to go for high-quality filters, which means those with a higher MERV rating.
  • Construction: There is new construction going on nearby, which will cause dust particles to enter your system through your return ducts.
